I wrote this as a rough draft for a really old article a while ago
This morning I woke up and grabbed some socks to put on. First, I came across a pair of socks that were quite incorrectly matched: one thick, solid and gray, the other thin with white spots at the toes and heel. Not only was this sock uncomfortably thin, but at some point one thread had become unstrung, so the end of the sock was gigantic and far from its original elasticity. I can put up with a lot in a sock, but not anything this bad.
So I threw the bad sock away and went looking for one matching the thick one. Of course, earlier that week I had matched this thick one's counterpart with some thin one, and had in turn effectively ruined 4 days of socks. When I found a matching pair of white socks with gray stripes, I thought I had a winner. The left sock (and yes, there is a left and a right sock) fit fairly well - good enough, at least. Upon putting on the right sock, I encountered one of my old enemies: when you pull the sock on and tighten it, there's still a bunch of extra, loose "skin" behind your heel, driving you completely crazy. This "skin" not only makes you want to kill yourself when in socks, but when you put on a shoe, the extra material rubs up and down upon every step you take. This is one of the few sock problems it's hard to forget when you're walking around throughout the day. |
